The Challenge

Landcare Tasmania supports a large, decentralised network of community-led environmental groups: 305 member organisations and more than 8,000 volunteers working across the state to protect soils, waterways, flora and fauna.
While the movement was strong on the ground, its digital presence was doing little more than sharing information. Landcare Tasmania needed a platform that could do real work: connect people to local groups, surface community-led project ideas, streamline administration, and strengthen the organisation’s ability to advocate for funding and support on behalf of its members.
The challenge was to build something genuinely useful for hundreds of autonomous groups, without creating unnecessary complexity or administrative burden.

Our Approach

For Purpose designed and developed a new digital hub on the NationBuilder platform, transforming Landcare Tasmania’s website into a functional community and operations hub. The site was designed to bridge digital engagement and on-the-ground action, with tools that support how the Landcare movement actually works. Key features include:

  • The Project Bank – an interactive map where members can share project ideas and funding needs, helping Landcare Tasmania understand priorities across the state and advocate for targeted investment.
  • A searchable group directory – making it easy for volunteers, partners and supporters to find and connect with local Landcare groups.
  • A members-only area – with gated access to shared resources, templates and guidance, reducing duplication and administrative friction for grassroots leaders.

Behind the scenes, the platform integrates sign-ups, role management and workflows into a single system, giving local groups autonomy while maintaining state-wide visibility.

The Impact

The Landcare Tasmania Digital Hub now acts as the operational backbone of a statewide environmental movement.

  • Volunteers and supporters can quickly find and join local projects.
  • Grassroots groups can promote their work, manage members and access shared resources independently.
  • Landcare Tasmania has a clearer, real-time picture of what’s happening across its network, strengthening coordination, advocacy and funding conversations.

Delivered within a cost-efficient budget, the platform reduces administrative overhead and redirects time and resources toward what matters most: caring for Tasmania’s land and ecosystems.
This project demonstrates how well-designed digital infrastructure can empower local action at scale, supporting community-led change rather than replacing it.
