On November 28-29th, on the eve of the Paris Climate Summit, hundreds of thousands of people around the world took to the streets to demand action on climate change.
Here in New Zealand, the mobilisation was by far the biggest climate change march in our history. For Purpose played a central role in the success of the event, engaged to develop the website and mobilisation tools to support the distributed management of the 35 events around the country to local organisers. We were also retained to convene the steering group of environmental NGO's, faith groups, unions, and civil society organisations who came together to support the mobilisation.
For Purpose developed digital tools to provide centralised leadership but designed to empower local organisers in the regions under a common banner. Nationbuilder was used to host a website that engaged supporters through a pledge to march then connected them locally to self-organise local events. Local organisers were given the tools and training to access data to coordinate and communicate locally. The 35 events nationwide that mobilised 30,000 people on a single day of action are a testament to a robust organising strategy and digital toolkit we are proud to have created.
